Equine Transportation Yellow Pages

Things to review before choosing a hauler:

1. Check the Better Business Bureau to ensure there have been no complaints regarding the company.

2. Ask for a contract; have them send you a contract, read it thoroughly before signing. If you have questions don’t be afraid to ask. Make a copy before sending back.

3. Ask if they have an equine first aid kit

4. If a deposit is requested, ensure it is noted in the contract – example if they cancel your haul, you get your deposit back.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for photos of their truck and trailer, inside and out.

6. Ask about the care they provide your horse, such as:
        a.Rest times- when and where
        b.Water- how often
        c.Feeding-what and how often

7. Ensure pick up times are set up and well communicated, therefore the hauler knows and understands the acceptable pick up times. This way there is no middle of the night pick ups if you have to work at 5am…

8. ASK for a 24 hour number where you could contact the shipper during the shipping process.

9. Ask if they had video surveillance at all times.

10. Ask for an approximate drop off date/time.

11. Stress good communication along the way.

12. ASK if they would take your hay and how many bales of hay they would require for the trip.

13. Ask if there were extra charges for tack and trunks (don't assume they will take free).

14. Ask the size of the box or slot stall and the height of the trailer.
